Wildflower Seed Starter
Wildflower Seed Starter – to boost the germination of seeds
Vermiculite granules soaked in smoky water.
Extensive research over many years at Kings Park and Botanic Garden and at several other organisations has shown that the seeds of many species of Australian native plants benefit from - or even require - the naturally occurring chemicals found in smoke from the burning of Australian bush litter, as a catalyst to germination.
Australian bushlands often regenerate quickly after a bush fire. Much of this is due to the germination of seeds after the fire. Seeds are often released after the fire into a bed of ashes or are already in the soil covered by ash. When good rains arrive chemicals from the smoke held in the ash and soil help to trigger the germination of the seeds.
The Wildflower Seed Starter contains karrikinolide which has been identified the active chemical in smoke that stimulates seeds to germinate. We recommend Wildflower Seed Starter for most of our range of packaged seeds - and it will not harm other seeds.
Simply sprinkle it on top of the soil or potting mix after sowing the seeds. The first watering washes the smoke chemicals around the seeds to boost germination. Seed Starter can also help produce stronger seedlings and improve their survival after germination. In those cases where the seeds need to be soaked in hot water before sowing, a small amount of the granules can be added to the hot water and left to soak with the seeds to help trigger their germination.
